Kolkata, November 17 (Language) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led central government of trying to saffronize various institutions across the country, including the Indian cricket team.
The practice jersey of the Indian cricket team is now saffron in colour.
Speaking at the beginning of Jagaddhatri Puja at the poppy market in central Kolkata, Banerjee alleged that the BJP has added saffron color not only to the cricket team’s jerseys but also to the painting of metro stations.
Expressing his disagreement with this, he said, “They are trying to paint the entire country in saffron colour.” We are proud of our Indian players and I am confident that they will be winners in the World Cup, but they (BJP) brought saffron color there also and our boys now practice in saffron colored jerseys. Metro stations have been painted saffron. this is unacceptable.”
Taking a dig at the BJP, he said the nation “belongs to the people of the country and not to the people of just one party”.
BJP has reacted sharply to his remarks.
BJP leader Rahul Sinha said, “After a few days she may question why there is saffron color in our national flag.” We do not consider it appropriate to even react to such statements.
