Coordinated efforts are being made to rescue employees trapped after tunnel collapse: Road Transport Ministry.


New Delhi, November 13 (Language) The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on Monday said that coordinated efforts are being made to rescue the workers trapped at the site of Silkyara tunnel collapse in Uttarakhand as soon as possible.

A portion of the tunnel under construction between Silkyara and Dandalgaon on the Brahmakhal-Yamunotri National Highway collapsed early Sunday, trapping 40 workers.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has taken up construction of a 4.531 km long two-lane bi-directional tunnel at Silkyara to connect Gangotri and Yamunotri base under Radi Pass area as part of the Chardham Mahamarg project in Uttarakhand.

The ministry’s company National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) is working on this project. The ministry had approved the project expenditure of Rs 1,383 crore for this on March 9, 2018.

The ministry said, ‘The incident was immediately reported to all concerned agencies of the state/central government and rescue operations were initiated…All coordinated efforts are being made to rescue the stranded employees at the earliest.’
