New Delhi, November 14 (Language) Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal visited the manufacturing unit of American electric vehicle company Tesla in Fremont, California.
He said the company will double its imports of vehicle components from India.
The minister is on a four-day visit to America.
Elon Musk, head of Tesla Inc., the world’s largest electric car maker, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New York in June. After the meeting, Musk had said that he plans to visit India in 2024.
“Visited Tesla’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Fremont, California,” Goyal wrote on social media platform ‘X’. “It is great to see talented Indian engineers and finance professionals working in senior positions and Tesla’s contribution to transforming the automotive world.”
“Tesla is also proud to see the growing contribution of India’s vehicle equipment suppliers to the electric vehicle (EV) supply chain,” he said. It is on track to double its component imports from India. I miss Elon Musk and wish for his speedy recovery.
Social media platform ‘X’ is also owned by Elon Musk.
Musk had said in August 2021 that Tesla could set up a manufacturing unit in India if it was successful in importing vehicles into the country.
He had said that Tesla wants to launch its vehicles in India, “but the import duty (in India) is the highest compared to any major country in the world.”
India currently imposes 100 per cent import duty on fully imported cars with a CIF (cost, insurance and freight) value of more than US$40,000. It imposes 70 percent import duty on cars costing less than this.
