Bengaluru, Nov 9 (PTI) Head coach Chris Silverwood blamed inconsistency in batting for Sri Lanka’s poor performance in the World Cup after their five-wicket loss to New Zealand here on Thursday.
This was Sri Lanka’s seventh defeat in nine league stage matches, causing them to slip to ninth place in the points table. The top eight teams will qualify directly for the Champions Trophy in 2025.
“I think Sri Lanka’s poor performance is due to their inconsistent batting,” Silverwood said in the post-match press conference. It would be appropriate to say this. We will look at the last few matches that we missed chances. There were matches in which if we had got chances it could have looked very different. ,
He said, “But the fact remains that we have been inconsistent and we have been working on improving this for a long time and we need to continue working on this.” ,
Silverwood said that the batsmen needed to be more consistent.
“When we go back and see what happened in this tournament, it will be the batting that we will have to focus on,” he said. ,
“We need to start putting runs on the board on good wickets to put pressure on other teams,” Silverwood said. ,
The former England player also said that poor fielding disappointed him throughout the tournament.
“It’s disappointing because I mean, we dropped some catches during the tournament that cost us a lot,” he said. We are continuously working on this also. ,
