India’s Permanent Mission to the UN Envoy R Madhusudan said in an open debate in the UN Security Council on Monday on the topic ‘Maintaining international peace and security: promoting sustainable peace through common development’. ‘If shortage of resources continues then development is a distant dream. Therefore, India worked towards reform of international financial institutions at various fora, including its current presidency of the G20.”

This meeting of the 15-member committee of the United Nations Security Council was held under the chairmanship of China this month.

Madhusudan said that as the concept paper of the meeting suggests, “We must work on transparent and equitable financing and remain alert to the dangers of unsustainable financing that leads to a vicious cycle of debt trap.”

He said that a comprehensive approach to international security should include the interdependence of the three pillars of the United Nations system – peace and security, development and human rights.

“Security is indeed multidimensional, but it cannot be appropriate for the Security Council to be involved in every aspect, including aspects that are mandated to other UN bodies,” Madhusudan said.
