Mumbai, November 20 (Language) The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday arrested one more accused in the Visakhapatnam espionage case after raiding two places in Mumbai. The agency gave this information.
The NIA said in a statement that the case pertains to the leaking of defense intelligence information through the Pakistani ISI spy network.
He said that with the arrest of Aman Salim Shaikh from Mumbai, the number of people arrested so far in this case has increased to three.
The NIA said it has already filed a charge sheet against four people, including two absconding Pakistani operatives, in this case.
The NIA on Monday raided two locations in Mumbai and another location in Hojai in Assam’s Nagaon district in search of the wanted accused, the agency said.
It said Sheikh was found to be involved in activating SIM cards that were being used by Pakistani intelligence officers involved in the gang.
This gang first came to light in 2021 when the ‘Counter Intelligence Cell, Andhra Pradesh’ arrested the accused under sections 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 121A (conspiracy to commit offense against the government) of the Indian Penal Code on January 12 of the same year. ) and registered a case under relevant sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 and the Official Secrets Act, 1923.
NIA took over this case for investigation in June 2023.
The NIA on Monday seized two mobile phones from the spot where Shaikh was arrested, while two more mobile phones and several sensitive documents were seized from other locations during the raid.
