Patna/New Delhi, November 8 (Language) Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday apologized in both the houses of the legislature as well as outside it for his remarks a day earlier regarding the importance of women’s education in controlling the population.
The top Janata Dal United (JDU) leader’s comments were criticized by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi. Bihar’s opposition parties created a ruckus in the House demanding Nitish’s resignation, due to which the proceedings of the state legislature had to be adjourned several times today.
The National Commission for Women alleged that the Chief Minister used “derogatory and vulgar language” and asked Bihar Assembly Speaker Awadh Bihari Chaudhary to take strict action against Nitish.
Nitish had made a controversial statement in the state legislature on Tuesday stressing on the importance of education among women to control the population.
When Nitish reached the assembly complex this morning, BJP MLAs held placards in their hands condemning his statements and also demanded his resignation.
Nitish, the state’s longest serving chief minister, stood at the entrance for a few minutes, then moved towards a temporary stage set up nearby where leaders address journalists during the session.
Speaking to reporters, Nitish said, “Today I have come to know that what I said yesterday was not liked by many people.” My intention was to highlight my government’s emphasis on women empowerment and the role of improving literacy among women in population control. However, if anyone’s sentiments have been hurt, I apologize and take back my words.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized Nitish for his “derogatory” comments.
He expressed surprise that despite such “insult” to women, the leaders of the constituent parties of the opposition party ‘Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance’ (India) did not utter a single word.
Senior BJP leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy said that Nitish Kumar’s statement is a ‘symbol of perversion’.
Criticizing Nitish, Owaisi said that through his remarks Nitish Kumar has sent a wrong message to the women of the country and Bihar.

As the uproar by the opposition members continued, the Speaker adjourned the proceedings of the House till 2 pm. After this the Chief Minister went to the Legislative Council, where the proceedings began in the afternoon.
BJP’s Legislative Council Member (MLC) Nivedita Singh demanded Nitish’s resignation. On this the Chief Minister said, “I apologize as I did earlier in front of journalists and in the Assembly.”
During this, the opposition members became angry when Nitish said sarcastically, “These people are making noise because they must have received instructions from above.”
As the opposition continued to create ruckus, Chairman Devesh Chandra Thakur adjourned the House proceedings till 12.50 pm.

Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has written a letter to the Assembly Speaker demanding strict action against the Chief Minister for using “derogatory and vulgar language”.
NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma, in her post on “X”, urged Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to condemn Nitish Kumar.
