Bengaluru, November 9 (Language) Pakistan has reached an impossible position of reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup after New Zealand’s five-wicket victory over Sri Lanka with 160 balls to spare here on Thursday.
Only a big win by Pakistan over England and Afghanistan over South Africa can stop New Zealand from becoming the fourth team to reach the semi-finals.
India, South Africa and Australia have already secured their places in the last four. New Zealand’s place in the knockouts is almost certain with the win over Sri Lanka.
Pakistan is currently placed fifth in the table with eight points and to remain hopeful of reaching the semi-finals, it will have to win by 287 runs after batting first against England in Kolkata on Saturday.
But while chasing the target, they will have to win in 284 balls (more than 47 overs).
With all equations looking against Pakistan, New Zealand are expected to face India in the first semi-final on November 15 at the Wankhede Stadium.
The second semi-final will be played between five-time champions Australia and South Africa.
