TRAI’s recommendations on satellite spectrum allocation after appointment of new chairman

New Delhi, November 20 (Language) Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will issue its recommendations on the modalities of satellite spectrum allocation and other pending matters after the appointment of the regular chairman. An official source has given this information.

The post of TRAI chief has been vacant since October 1 after PD Vaghela’s tenure ended in September. At present, TRAI member Meenakshi Gupta has the additional charge of its chairperson.

A senior TRAI official said, “The TRAI chairperson will take a decision on the recommendation. We are almost ready with recommendations on satellite spectrum allocation but the final decision will be taken by the chairperson.”

The Department of Telecommunications had invited applications for this post in June and its last date was in August.

A senior official of the department said that the process has been completed on time and only the decision at the higher level regarding the appointment of the new chairman is awaited.

The Department of Telecommunications has granted Internet Service Provider and GMPCS licenses to Bharti Group-backed OneWeb and Jio Satellite Communications.

Both companies can provide Internet services by connecting satellite services to terrestrial networks or through VSATs to end customers.

Bharti Group Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal said last month that OneWeb was ready to launch services for end customers within a month.
